What do I need to know about Banking in Korea?
Getting started is very simple. You will need your passport with your working visa and Alien Registration Card. If possible, ask your director or someone who speaks Korean to accompany you to the bank. It will speed things up if the banker’s English is limited.
When you get your account, it is useful to ask for a cheque card rather than a simple bank card. A cheque card allows you to make purchases at shops that are equipped with a POS system. The bank card is only used for withdrawing cash at the ATM. Since ATMs are generally only available until 11pm or midnight, it is extremely useful to have a cheque card if you forget to withdraw the necessary cash.
Sending money home is quite simple. Bring your bankbook and passport to the bank. Many banks have tellers and VIP or special services sections. It is to the latter that you will complete the wire transfer. You will need to know the bank details for the receiving bank as well (address, branch/transit number, bank ID number, and account number). Some banks require documentation from your employer indicating the source of your funds. Inquire in advance at the bank to save a wasted trip. Most banks provide this service for a nominal charge, 10 000-20 000 Won. Wire transfers generally take 5-10 business days, depending on the bank.
Using a Western debit card is possible at global ATMs. These are few and far between however. Also, in the event that your card gets “eaten”, your bank will be unable to send you a replacement.
Most restaurants and shops accept Visa and MasterCard. Like anything else, inquire first to save yourself embarrassment and a difficult situation if you have no other way to pay.
What should I expect with an interview with a Korean school owner?
Most foreigners are surprised with how interviews are conducted. Typically, school directors conduct very short interviews anywhere from 5-10 minutes. Often they will only ask a few questions and then turn it over to you to ask a few questions. Most directors are really only looking to see if they have a GOOD feeling about a teacher and whether they would like to work with them. When do schools hire?
Private schools are open all year round and hire every month. Public schools have 2 main hiring periods in the last week of August and last week of February.
Do I need to know some Korean?
No you don’t need to know any Korean but it will definitely score you some brownie points if you do. If a foreigner uses any Korean they are often praised to no end. I don’t have teaching experience can I still find a position?
Yes. Many have no experience when they come to Korea. You just need to have realistic salary expectations and it may take a little longer to find a position.
Do I need a TESOL or TEFL Certification?
No. It really isn’t necessary in Korea, but it certainly can’t hurt. If you do decide to enroll in a program it is recommended you do a program that is at least 100hrs as that can result in a higher pay grade for those working in public schools.

Do schools provide training?
If one is hired for a Public school position in the 2 hiring periods (August & February) they will have a 1 week orientation. For private schools there is little to no training. Schools will typically have a teacher shadow a current teacher for 1-2 days, but that is really the extent of it. Some schools will have no training at all. It’s a sink or swim environment so one should be prepared for that in advance. It’s really important to just be open to learn. Most schools expect new teachers to have an initial learning curve.

What deductions will come out of my paycheck each month?
1. Income Tax
Approximate rate of 1.44% of income for employees or about 3.3% for contractors. This depends on how the school is set up. Most are set up with teachers as contracted employees.
2. Pension
Approximate rate of 4.5% (with possibility of being refunded twice that amount at completion of contract, depending on nationality)
3. Health Insurance
Approximate rate of 2.24%
What are the working hours like?
Private school range depending on the type of school. Most private schools require a teacher to work 30 teaching hours per week. Kindergarten schools have working hours roughly from 9am-6-7pm, whereas afternoon schools run from anywhere from 1pm/2pm - 8p/9pm. Adult schools usually have a split shift where a teacher teaches from 6am/7am- 10am and then again from 5pm-9pm.
Public schools run from 9am-5pm.
99% of positions require teachers to work Monday through Friday.
Can I bring my spouse or children with me?
Yes, you can but most employers offer single housing which isn’t suitable for families. Most employers prefer applicants with no dependents. If one wishes to bring his/her family it will be more challenging to find employment and will require patience.
Can I apply with a friend?
Yes, but it will limit ones options. Schools rarely hire 2 teachers at a time. The most likely scenario is for two friends to find 2 different positions in the same area...
I’m currently living outside my native country can I apply for a visa?
All first timers wanting to work in Korea have to apply for a visa at a Korean Consulate IN their NATIVE COUNTRY ONLY!!! Unfortunately, visa laws are very strict on this point so if an applicant is currently overseas they will need to go back to their native country in order to get a work visa for Korea.
**If one has previously held a teaching visa in Korea they are permitted to apply from a different country.
